FIRE ISLAND'S STRIKING MODERNIST BEACH HOUSES

Thanks to inventive architects like Horace Gifford, New York's Fire Island Pines has become an architectural destination: Not exactly your average beach shares, there are dozens of midcentury modern homes with design flourishes like a floating staircase or even plush "makeout lofts." The architect Christopher Rawlins is now cataloging them all at the website Pines Modern, complete with virtual tours.
